How to Move a Refrigerator: Essential Packing and Handling Tips

September 16, 2025 by James Crowley

The kitchen is usually the slowest room to pack and the most likely to produce a damage claim, since it holds the heaviest appliance in the house alongside some of its most fragile items. This guide covers the full kitchen: the refrigerator, cookware, small appliances, and pantry items, plus what to expect if you’re working with Novi and Northville movers instead of doing it yourself. If you’re specifically looking for how to pack dishes and glassware, that’s covered in detail in our dish packing guide; this page focuses on everything else in the kitchen.

Planning Your Kitchen Packing Timeline

Pack the kitchen last among the main living spaces, since you’ll need it functional up to moving day, but start gathering boxes and materials at least a week ahead. A good order is: pantry and rarely-used small appliances first, then cookware and everyday dishes, then countertop appliances you use daily, and finally the refrigerator and freezer, which get defrosted and cleared the day before or the morning of the move.

Packing Pots, Pans, and Cookware

Nest pots and pans by size with a sheet of packing paper between each one to prevent scratching nonstick coatings. Wrap lids separately since they don’t nest well and tend to shift and crack against cookware in transit. Cast iron is the heaviest item in most kitchens, so pack it low in a small, well-taped box rather than a large box that becomes too heavy to lift safely. Bakeware such as glass casserole dishes should be wrapped individually like dishware and packed upright, never flat-stacked.

Packing Small Appliances

Coffee makers, toasters, blenders, and stand mixers travel best in their original boxes if you still have them. Without original packaging, wrap the appliance body in a moving blanket or bubble wrap and pack any glass components, such as blender pitchers or carafes, separately with paper padding. Remove detachable blades and beaters and tape them together in a labeled bag so they don’t puncture packing paper or injure whoever unpacks the box.

Handling Pantry Items and Food

Plan to use up perishables and opened items in the two weeks before your move rather than pack them. Unopened, non-perishable pantry items can be boxed as-is, but tape lids on anything with a loose cap (oils, spices, syrups) to prevent leaks that ruin an entire box. Glass jars should be wrapped individually. Frozen food generally does not survive a move well unless it is a short local move with a cooler, so plan freezer contents down to a minimal amount before moving day.

Preparing and Moving Your Refrigerator

The refrigerator is the one kitchen item that needs its own prep timeline, separate from the rest of the packing. Start by removing all food and interior parts. Take out shelves, drawers, and bins, wash them, dry them completely, and wrap them in bubble wrap or moving blankets for transport. Use tape or bungee cords to keep the doors shut during the move, and place a block under the fridge so it doesn’t roll.

Plan for 24 hours of defrost time before moving day, most side-by-side and French door models take that long to fully melt out. Put towels around the base to catch the water, and unplug the unit once defrosting starts. If your model has a water line for an ice maker or dispenser, shut off the supply valve and disconnect the line before moving day, not while the crew is waiting in the driveway.

A standard refrigerator weighs 250 to 400 pounds, and larger French door and side-by-side models can run heavier, so plan for at least two people and a dolly rather than attempting it solo. Keep the refrigerator upright throughout the move, in the truck and on the dolly, since tipping it on its side can let compressor oil flow into the cooling lines. At the new home, let the refrigerator sit upright and running for at least 4 hours, longer if it was on its side at any point, before restocking food, so the compressor oil can settle.

How Professional Movers.com Packs Kitchens Across Novi, Bloomfield Hills, and Northville

Every mover on a Professional Movers.com crew is a background-checked W-2 employee, not day labor, which matters most in the kitchen since it’s where most damage claims start on an unsupervised move. Whether the job is a house sale in Novi, a downsizing move in Bloomfield Hills, or an office kitchenette relocation in Northville, the same trained crew handles both the appliances and the packing for everything in between. Rental crates, including dish and glassware partitions, are available through rental crates, and appliances or boxed kitchen items can go into short-term storage if move-in day doesn’t line up with move-out day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before a move should I start packing the kitchen? Start gathering boxes and packing rarely-used items about a week out, and save the refrigerator, everyday dishes, and daily-use appliances for the last day or two before the move.

Can a refrigerator be moved on its side? It is not recommended. Laying a refrigerator on its side can let compressor oil flow into the cooling lines, which can cause the compressor to fail once the unit is upright and running again.

Do movers pack pots, pans, and small appliances, or just dishes? Full-service movers typically pack the entire kitchen, cookware and small appliances included, not just dishware. Ask your Moving Consultant whether you want full kitchen packing or just specific items covered.

Should I empty the pantry before a move? Use up perishables and opened items in advance, and box unopened non-perishables as-is. Tape any loose-capped bottles shut to prevent leaks in transit.
